o exposiciones. Michael Wilford and

THE NEW BRITISH EMBASSY, Berlin,
Germany Client: Overseas Estates Department, Foreign & Commonwealth Office. Architect: Michael Wilford & Partners, London ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION The British Embassy is located on Wilhelmstrasser, in the Pariser Platz area of Berlin, where all new buildings are subject to very strict planning guidelines. It presents an open, modern, and dignified personality whilst respecting the city's tradition of building massing articulation and materials. A ceremonial grand staircase leads from the entrance court to a wintergarden around which the public elements of the Embassy are organised. These elements include exhibition space, conference room, dining room and library.
The British Embassy will re-occupy its central location on Wilhelmstrasse when Berlin becomes the Federal Capital of Germany. The nearby Berlin Wall sterilised the immediate area for thirty years and it is only now that there is the opportunity for the district to regain something of its earlier 20th Century pre-eminence. The Embassy site allows the provision of open spaces within the city block, similar to the courtyards of the pre-war Palais and allowing daylight and natural ventilation into the heart of the Embassy. A combined vehicle and pedestrian Gateway from Wilhelmstrasse leads to the Entrance Court providing an elegant approach and set-down within the building. The Court is a transition in ambience and culture between the City and the Embassy. An oak tree at its centre will provide an immediate memory and experience of Britain. On ceremonial occasions important visitors will be formally received in the Entrance Hall and escorted up the grand staircase to the Wintergarden on the 'piano nobile' level above. The Wintergarden, bathed in sunshine from circular rooflights and generous windows overlooking the entrance court, is the internal focus of the Embassy. A circular Conference Room and formal Dining Room overlook Wilhelmstrasse and are arranged around the Wintergarden to allow use individually or in combination with each other, for grand banquets and large exhibitions. Meanwhile, staff will enter and leave the building through the Entrance Hall via a security door adjacent to the lift core. Offices and staff circulation balconies encircle upper levels of the Wintergarden providing glimpses for visitors of activities in the building above the staff views of special events on the 'piano nobile' below. Everyone visiting and working in the Embassy is therefore able to experience the dignity and grandeur of the ceremonial spaces. The sequence of movement into and through the Embassy should evoke a special sense of style and presence. The street facade establishes a 22 metre high street plane across the full width of the site as required in the city urban development guidelines. This plane is a layered expression of the spaces and internal organisation of the building comprising three zones-base, ceremonial level (piano nobile) and offices. The composition is a balance of surface and void, terminated at the top by a cornice and mansard screen relating the building to the overall height and forum of adjacent structures. An abstract collage of forms is revealed through an opening in the facade, marking the entrance. These forms register the special character and importance of the Embassy in relation to the neutrality of adjacent buildings and hint at the special spaces contained within the Embassy, to encourage the visitor's sense of curiosity and anticipation. The new British Embassy will have a modern dignified personality whilst respecting the City's tradition of building massing, articulation and materials. for further Informations www.britischebotschaft.de
